What programme should I use for my building?

Well, there are several possibilities. First you need one of the three SCURK versions:

DOSSCURK, used by several famous artists (like Lee Sojot and Tom Behrend). It has its advantages and its disadvantages. Its biggest advantage is that it can easily import pcx-files. Its biggest problem is that it has a height limit. Usually it is no problem because a 1x1 building of maximum lenght is very unrealistic, but sometimes it is a pain. The interface is... different. It looks like a typical DOS programe, and although it has many things in common with WinScurk it takes time to get used to it. A last disadvantage is that you have to choose one of the 3 windows in the beginning, and then can't change it. An advantage is that it is the most stable version of SCURK.

Also take in mind that certain textures may not show up as well or be as well constrasted when the building is rendered. So, be sure that you choose textures that are not similar in color, hue, or luminance, as they will look indiscernable to each other once in SimCity 2000.

WinSCURK, some love it, some hate it. The Windows version brought many changes. The easier windows interface with the 3 seperate windows. Because it now works in Windows you can work on a tile and load pictures of buildings at the same time, to investigate them. I myself started with SCURK for Win 3.1. I advice people to try it instead of SCURK for Windows 95, because my experience was that it felt exactly the same, but was much more stable.

Many people use external programmes to make their buildings, and import the buildings after that. Paint Shop Pro is very popular among many schurkers. And some even use 3D rendering programmes. I myself recently modified a small part of a building with photoshop. Of course BAP buildings, at least screenshots, can also be imported.

There are some problems in importing SCURK files. SCURK uses a special color scheme, and does not often accept MS Paint imports. The best way to import a file is by exporting ane empty SCURK screenshot/building and the open it as a new file in a Graphic programme. Paste the image in the new file, adjust it, and then flatten the layers, if necassary. After that you can copy the building and paste it in SCURK. Sometimes you have to do cleaning jobs, because the background has the wrong colors, there are several ways to prevent that. I will write about that in another message.

There are many ways to make your buildings, and everybody has his own preference. I hope this information above has been helpful. Good luck finding your favourite way.
